| I always enjoy hearing how someone got their inspiration to write
a particular song. So, I wanted to give you a short "squibb" on
how these songs came about. The Lord Jesus Christ deserves all the credit for my being able to carry a tune, and my love of Gospel Music. He is my Inspiration for everything I write. And, He helps me! To access the lyrics of each song, just click on the song name at the beginning of the paragraph. My hope is to eventually have a clip of each song, so you can hear how they sound...did you hear me say, "work in progress" ? :D |
| Abraham Genesis 22:13 It was Sunday morning, August 13, 2000. I was getting ready for church - and suddenly I began to "hear" a song in my head. The words and the tune were coming all at the same time. I grabbed a cassette tape (don't gasp, it was Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver) -- and taped over my Doyle!! I was afraid I would lose the tune and the words before I could get it written down! Choices Deut. 4:29 If you check under My Story, you'll find some of the background that goes with this song. It came into being around 4am in early September, 1999. It is my song of repentance for wandering in the desert 40 years - and disobeying God, all the while thinking I was serving Him and doing the "right thing." Little White Lies Numbers 32:23 Do you remember that feeling when you were a little youngun' walking the edge of obedience, and your Mama comes around the corner and looks at you with "that look." Well, if so, you can relate to this song as much as I do. On a weekend when I was visiting Mom, I got up on Saturday morning with the thought in my head of how ya mama always knows everything -- and even as a mother then, I could see the look in my son's eyes when he was "caught!" In just a few minutes, the whole song had just come together. Hope you enjoy it. Some of the folks I've sung it for took it kind of personally ... the deacons, the choir -- you'll see what I mean. I intend no harm - to me it's a great fun, little song that hits the nail on the head! Enjoy! There Is Time Lamentations 3:22-23 My life seems to have been one hurried mess! For so many years it seemed like I could not get a grip on how to keep things on schedule. As I prayed about it, this song came. It is soothing to me. I hope it will be for you, too. Shoes Deuteronomy 29:5 A friend had sent me an email about the logistics of getting 2 million people on foot across a desert. The power that God displayed when he brought Israel out of Egypt is just mind-boggling. And, it occurred to me, that He still does that for all of us today, but our eyes are so blind we never realize it. Who Is This Jesus Mark 5 My brother-in-law had only recently trusted the Lord as his Savior, and he was struggling with how to stop focusing on providing for his own financial needs. As my concern for him grew, this song came. It was in July of 2001. The Answer Is God James 1:5-6 For those of you who have had the privilege of hearing Bro. Buddy Farris, you will recall that one phrase he uses is "the answer is God!" For whatever question may come in life, the answer is ALWAYS God! Uncle Dosh Romans 5:6-9 Boyd Grover Bralley was my uncle. For some reason that I don't know, everyone called him "Dosh." Around Cripple Creek, he was known to be a kind-hearted man, with an alcohol problem. In other words, he was a drunk. He was also very good to me - and I loved him dearly. He died in the 1980's, but in 2002 as I was driving to the Penhook Camp Meeting at Scottie's Fertilizer Warehouse in Penhook, VA, the words to this song began coming into my head. The song is all true. A couple of years ago, I had the privilege of singing at Gravely Memorial Pentecostal Holiness Church near Ft. Chiswell, VA - and Shelva Gravely, a second (or maybe third) cousin, who had grown up around Cripple Creek, was there - and heard me sing this song. She came to me after the service and asked, "Did Dosh REALLY get saved ?? !! ???" Praise the Lord, the answer is YES! Heard About Elijah II Kings 2 As I was reading my Bible, it suddenly "jumped out" at me that after Elijah was gone into heaven, Elisha took Elijah's mantle, and parted the waters of the Jordan River to get back across. I had never realized before that Elisha actually said, "Where is the LORD God of Elijah?" In today's world, more of us ought to be asking that question - and looking diligently for the answer! Do You Believe James 2:19 Someone very dear to me has often said, "I believe in God just as much as you do." But the life is wracked by alcohol, cursing and a lack of what most folks would call a Christian tesimony. As I pondered the sense of what is happening with that, I realized that just saying someone believes in God does NOT mean that Christ is the Lord of that life. Sing In The Spirit I Corinthians 14:15 Only recently, I learned that my Grandaddy (Dewey Madison) Wright had often told his family, as they sang for revivals and church services everywhere in Wythe County, "Sing in the Spirit, children!" When Aunt June told me that, I could just feel in my heart that it needed to be a song. God graciously gave me words to finish it. Faith Is Hebrews 11:1 I was filling in for the pianist at Faith Chapel in Check, Virginia - and on the way to a Sunday morning service, I had to pull off the side of the road to write down the words to this song. I had nothing to write on, so I wrote it in the back of my checkbook. <huge grin> |
